Bugs, Bats and Pumpkin Fun!!

Book a Virtual field trip for grades K – 2 via zoom

Length: 30 – 40 minute virtual zoom program

Description: Learn about bugs and where they go in the winter, why real bats are important, and enjoy a pumpkin experiment! Meet Shelly the turtle and Noodles the snake.

Material required: grown-ups please provide a piece of cut up vegetable or fruit with seeds for the experiment part of our program

This program includes:

15 minutes Guided Trail Exploration:
Follow our outdoor educator along our forest trail where we will discover what bugs do in the winter, why bats call Heartland Forest home, and what other animals call Heartland Forest home! Our outdoor educator will have packed our trail with eye spy fun for participants to follow along and participate from home.

10 minutes Pumpkin Experiment:
After we will conduct a pumpkin experiment with an interactive look at a piece of fruit/ vegetable of their choice from their kitchen.

5 minutes Live Animal Meet and Greet:
We will finish up with a zoom visit with Shelly our pet turtle and Noodles our pet snake.

Season’s Greetings

Book a Virtual Field Trip for Grade 1 via Zoom

Length: 30 – 40 minute virtual zoom program

Description: Investigate the daily and seasonal changes of Heartland Forest and how these changes affect the plants and animals that call Heartland home! Meet Shelly the turtle and Noodles the snake.

Materials required: Grown-ups please provide a piece of winter clothing (jacket, boot etc.), a piece of summer clothing (t-shirt, sandal, etc.) and a cold pack for the experiment part of our program

This program includes:

15 minute Guided Trail Exploration:
Follow our outdoor educator along our forest trail where we will discover what animals call Heartland Forest home and how their needs change with the seasons. Investigate and observe how the forest changes with the temperature. Our outdoor educator will have packed our trail with eye spy fun for participants to follow along and participate from home.

10 minute Experiment:
We will conduct a warm/cold experiment with an interactive look at how our needs change with the seasons using clothing found around the house.

5 minute Live Animal Meet and Greet:
We will finish up with a zoom visit with Shelly our pet turtle and Noodles our pet snake.

Migrate Hibernate Adapt

Book a Virtual Field Trip for Grade 2 via Zoom

Length: 30 – 40 minute virtual zoom program

Description: Investigate the ways in which wildlife at Heartland Forest overwinter through migration, adaptation or hibernation. See live animals overwintering in different life stages. Experiment with ice cubes to learn about pond life in winter! Meet Shelly the turtle and Noodles the snake.

Materials required: Grown-ups please provide a sturdy cup half-filled with water, a small object that sinks and a few ice cubes for the experiment part of our program.

This program includes:

15 minutes guided trail exploration:
Follow our outdoor educator along our forest trail where we will discover different types of animals and investigate their major physical characteristics. Learn how these animals adapt to survive winter. Our outdoor educator will have packed our trail with eye spy fun for participants to follow along and participate from home.

10 minute experiment:
We will conduct an experiment to investigate how pond life is affected by ice build-up in the winter.

5 minute Live Animal Meet and Greet:
We will finish up with a zoom visit with Shelly our pet turtle and Noodles our pet snake.

Trees Please

Book a Virtual Field Trip for Grade 3 via Zoom

Length: 30 – 40 minute virtual zoom program

Description: Explore Heartland Forest and learn tree ID and fun facts about our beautiful deciduous forest. Parts of a plant, life cycle, adaptations and forest community, Human uses through history, human impact, and how we benefit from the trees and plants around us!

Materials required: Grown-ups please provide two non-toxic leaves, (eg.maple leaf, lettuce leaf), piece of paper, a crayon, a shallow container with warm water and a small heavy object to keep the leaf from floating for the experiment part of our program.

15 minute Guided Trail Exploration:
Follow our outdoor educator along our forest trail where we will learn tree ID and fun facts about our beautiful deciduous forest. Parts of a plant, life cycle, adaptations and forest community, Human uses through history, human impact, and how we benefit from the trees and plants around us. Our outdoor educator will have packed our trail with eye spy fun for participants to follow along and participate from home.

10 minute Experiment:
We will conduct a leaf experiment with an interactive look at the characteristics of leaves and how they provide oxygen that other living things need to survive.

5 minute Live Animal Meet and Greet:
We will finish up with a zoom visit with Shelly our pet turtle and Noodles our pet snake.

Habitats and Communities

Book a Virtual Field Trip for Grade 4 via Zoom

Length: 30 – 40 minute virtual zoom program

Description: Explore Heartland Forest and learn how our plants and animals depend on the resources available in our unique Carolinian habitat to meet their needs. Investigate how changes to our habitat can affect plants and animals and the relationships between them. Meet Shelly the turtle and Noodles the snake.

This program includes:

25 minute Guided Trail Exploration:
Follow our outdoor educator along our forest trail where we will investigate ways in which plants and animals in a community depend on features of their habitat to meet important needs and identify factors that affect the ability of plants and animals to survive in a specific habitat. Our outdoor educator will have packed our trail with eye spy fun for participants to follow along and participate from home. Includes interactive fun fact game.

5 minute Live Animal Meet and Greet:
We will finish up with a zoom visit with Shelly our pet turtle and Noodles our pet snake.
