About the Heartland Forest Project

With a project of this size there are many revisions as time goes by but from notes and the development of our founder’s vision the concept of our finished project can best be stated as follows:

Outdoor education/recreation programs all tied to our environment.
Barrier-free nature trails through 93-acres of rare Carolinian forest.
Access to guided tours with knowledgeable guides.
A classroom with charts and illustrations of all of the inhabitants of the forest.
Universal Design of all facilities for ease of access to those with mobility problems.

The unique features of Heartland’s 93 acre Carolinian forest will be preserved for public benefit through its designation as an environmentally protected area. The forest provides a backdrop to scenic, barrier-free nature trails. The trails include educational display stations that provide information on specific habitat, details of wildlife and their importance in regional and global biodiversity. Guided ecological tours through the forest are available to environmental and school groups by simple advance booking. The tour experience will combine Ontario school-based outdoor curriculum with fun, hands-on activities. Heartland’s “Forest” is a working model and example of what an environmentally protected forest should be.
